Just remember the children's drawings, where the city is small houses, a river, trees, trams and, in general, a humane environment. Or Amsterdam, whose gingerbread houses by the canals are annually seen by millions of people from all over the world. Now let's look at the new districts of our cities, we can look at St. Petersburg, which was actually built on the model of Amsterdam, but something went wrong. Or we can look at smaller cities, and not only in Russia, because even in Europe these are most often the most ordinary boxes. Even if we look at expensive architecture, we will still see boxes, just with slightly more expensive decor. Somehow we have reached a situation where putting one box on top of another is considered the coolest thing possible, and few people care that these boxes can be placed in Murmansk as well as in Tel Aviv - only the font of the sign on the house will change, but not the appearance. Where is the uniqueness, humanity and just interestingness? And if you think that only I care about these issues, then you are wrong! Today we will talk about urban development and architecture, why these industries are increasingly focusing not on Le Corbusier and the works of science fiction writers, but on medieval cities. And at the same time, we will touch on the topic of new cities, because in Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries, every six months, some very respected official fantasizes about building an entire city. So let's discuss whether it is possible to build a normal new city from scratch? What principles should be used to design it? Who should live in it? And most importantly, how to make it such that people would want to live in it? Today we will try to answer these questions using examples from England and the Netherlands, where in the 90s they began to build two new cities - Poundbury and Brandevoort. To put it simply, I am an urbanist with an unhealthy love of transport. I am not an architect, so I will not tell you about the choice of materials or different styles of architecture, but I will tell you about the correct urban development policy, how to lay a tram, what a street should be like and how to make a park without drug addicts and alcoholics. -------- Timestamps: 00:00 Scary and nice cities 02:44 Will a new city fix everything? 04:10 New Urbanism and the Truman Show 06:45 Architecture of Power, Ambition and Money 08:13 The King vs. Ugly Houses! 09:33 Why Design Is Needed 11:58 The Role of a Good Architect 13:06 Poundbury — a New Town in Great Britain 14:07 Brandevoort — a New Town in the Netherlands 16:02 Architecture of Disneyland 18:03 City-Village 19:49 Design vs. Machines 20:44 City 10 Minutes 22:29 Insurance Against Slums 24:12 The Structure of Poundbury and Brandevoort 25:49 Mistakes of New Cities 28:46 Kitsch or Beauty?
