Istanbul Research Institute is presenting a new lecture series titled “Republic Talks.” In the lecture series to be given by Maltepe University Atatürk’s Principles and Revolutionary History Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Çekiç, “The Republic” will be addressed from a different perspective each month. The event titled “Why and How Did the Ottoman Empire Collapse?” held on Tuesday, February 16 at 18:30 focused on the main reasons for the state’s stagnation and decline through visual and written documents. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Çekiç explained the title of the speech as follows: “The efforts of the sultans, who realized the inadequacy of madrasah education that lagged far behind the science and technology of the era, to open modern schools, the areas of reform they resorted to in order to modernize society, why they were unsuccessful in these areas even at the cost of their lives, and how they were ultimately dragged into debt and then shared out by colonialist states will be discussed.” About Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Çekiç Born in 1944 in İskenderun. He completed his primary and secondary school in İskenderun and high school in Burdur. After graduating from the Department of Administration and Politics at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences in 1966, he completed his MA and PhD at Marmara University. Çekiç, who currently serves as the Head of the Department of Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution at Maltepe University, narrates the achievements of the Republic, revolutions and Atatürk in the TV programs he prepares and presents. His main works are: "From the Empire to the Republic: Documentary of the Turkish War of Independence", "History of the Republic", "The Last Year: 1938", "From Mondros to Istanbul", "From Samsun to Erzurum", "From Sivas to Ankara"
