Cats have lived with humans for thousands of years, but how did these wild, solitary predators become one of the most popular pets? The story of cat domestication begins in the Neolithic Age, when farmers would protect their grain stores from rats and cats would hunt rats in exchange for food. This beneficial coexistence led cats to live alongside humans and migrate from Anatolia throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. From ancient Egypt, where cats were symbols of goddesses like Bastet and even strict laws were made to protect them, to the Roman and Middle Ages, when cats would go out to sea with ships to catch rats, the role of cats in cultures and civilizations has emerged in many forms. But it was during this same Middle Ages that cats were persecuted due to superstitions, especially those associated with witches and Satanism. Scientific studies show that today's domestic cats evolved from African wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica). These cats still retain many of the characteristics of their ancestors, including their hunting ability and territorial behavior. Even some of the strange behaviors of cats, such as purring when stressed or their fear of cucumbers, have their roots in their instincts and evolutionary characteristics. The story of cats is not just a tale of a domesticated animal, but also a story of coexistence, evolution, and adaptation with humans.
