Don't miss a special edition of the "Viva Historia" podcast with Tetelu and Mădălin Hodor discussing the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The Romanian Revolution of 1989 was a period of protests, street fights and demonstrations held in Romania, between 16 and 22 December 1989, part of the string of 1989 revolutions around the world. The Romanian Revolution began in Timișoara and spread rapidly throughout the country, culminating in the trial and execution of the Secretary General of the Romanian Communist Party, Nicolae Ceaușescu, and his wife Elena, and the end of 42 years of communist rule in Romania. It was also the last ouster of a Marxist–Leninist government in a Warsaw Pact country since the events of 1989, and the only one in which the country's leadership was violently overthrown and the dictator executed. The revolution took place after a period of severe austerity, in which food and electricity rationing was imposed, instituted by the Ceaușescu regime to repay the country's foreign debt and Romania's transformation into autarchy.
