J. Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York on April 22, 1904 and quickly became a great physicist, known to history as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, that top-secret US operation whose goal was to create the atomic bomb before the Nazis did. In a few months he and the thousands of people who took part in the project created Gadget, the first prototype of an atomic bomb, dropped on July 16, 1945 during the famous Trinity Test. Shortly after, two more bombs - Little Boy and Fat Man - were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the last years of his life Oppenheimer became a pacifist and is still one of the most controversial scientists in history. 00:00 Who is Oppenheimer 01:28 Patrick Blackett 02:04 The University of Göttingen and quantum mechanics 03:14 The discovery of fission 04:42 The Manhattan Project 06:35 The Trinity test 08:36 August 1945: Hiroshima and Nagasaki #atomic #manhattanproject #geopop Credit Basch Opdracht Anefo Bundesarchiv doddtra IAEAvideo Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Los Alamos Laboratory Museum of Radioactivity National Archives and Records Administration National Archives Seattle Municipal Archives sovietnukes TheLBJLibrary Trinity Remembered NSDL
