The Al-Sham Writing Group, led by Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani, was created from the merger of several Islamist groups. This group announced its existence as a successor to Jabhat al-Nusra, which was previously linked to al-Qaeda. The main goal of Tahrir al-Sham is to establish an Islamic government based on Sharia in Syria. Despite the official severing of ties with al-Qaeda, some analysts believe that the group is still influenced by al-Qaeda's ideology. Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of this group, is one of the key and influential figures in the Syrian civil war. Jolani joined al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2003, where he operated under the command of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. After the death of al-Zarqawi and the weakening of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Jolani formed Jabhat al-Nusra in 2011, and this group quickly became one of the strongest opposition groups to Bashar al-Assad's regime and was present in many areas of Syria. However, in 2017, various Islamist groups merged with the Fatah al-Sham Front and formed the Tahrir al-Sham Board, with Jolani remaining as the leader of this coalition.
