Alex works with handicrafts to survive and take care of his four children because there is no job market for people who have left the prison system. After all, who would lend a hand to an ex-convict? As a child, at the age of 9, Alex ran away from home and went to Praça da Sé. It was the dream of that young man who had become an orphan at a very young age and was cared for by his older brothers. In downtown São Paulo, he realized his dream, but he also lived his worst nightmare. There, he began to get involved with other abandoned children and began stealing wallets and purses, and using and selling drugs. From the age of 9 to 17, he went to Fundação Casa (formerly Febem) 15 times because of the crimes he had committed. During that time, he went back and forth between his brothers' houses. The streets were his home and the life he led was the destiny he believed was his. Until, as an adult, he was arrested and this time ended up in prison alongside other offenders, some of them more serious. There, he had an insight that he wanted to change his life and had a frank conversation with God. He wanted responsibility, which was what Alex needed in his life to take a better path. God answered him with his freedom, two months after the conversation, and also with the responsibility of raising four children: Maicon, Kiara, Luara and Hendrik. With his children, he understood that he could no longer live a life of crime, and so he began his work as a craftsman. Everything that Alex finds on the street becomes an accessory, from earrings and necklaces to dream catchers, and that is how he manages to bring his daily bread into the home. Since serving his last sentence in prison, Alex has even managed to get some formal jobs, but none of them long-term. This is a reality for those who want to start a new life after prison; there are few opportunities for people who have left the prison system, but it would be important for the job market to see the potential of these people. Every year, between 5,000 and 30,000 inmates are released in the country, and giving them jobs encourages the recovery of the right to freedom and the reduction of new crimes.
