The story of When the Phone Rings begins when Hong Hee-joo (Chae Soo-bin) agrees to marry Paik Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok). Hong Hee-jo is the second child of a media executive in South Korea. Initially, the Hong family was going to marry their first child, Hong In-a (Han Jae-yi) to Paik Sa-eon. However, Hong In-a ran away on the wedding day so Hee-joo agreed to replace her sister for personal reasons. Paik Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo's marriage was carried out privately. During the three years of marriage, Hee-joo never appeared in public, let alone accompanied Sa-eon as a wife. So, no one ever knew or saw Paik Sa-eon's wife. However, Hee-joo actually remains active working as a sign language interpreter on news shows and in court. She did this after having an accident in the past that caused her to experience mutism. The problems began in the third year of her marriage to Paik Sa-eon. Her husband came from a prestigious political family and became the youngest presidential spokesman in Korea. Paik Sa-eon's background also included time spent as a war correspondent, hostage negotiator, and headline news anchor. When Sa-eon was focused on handling the South Korean hostage situation. He received news that his wife, Hong Hee-joo, had been kidnapped by an unknown person. However, his mother-in-law, Kim Yeon-hui (Oh Hyun-kyung) gave false information. So, Sa-eon thought the kidnapping was just a bluff and he said something that Hong Hee-joo never imagined. That situation, without Paik Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo realizing it, completely changed their marriage which was actually on the brink because it was approaching the end of the contract. The drama version script was written by Kim Ji-woon (Hyde Jekyll Me, Docton John) and directed by Park Sang-woo (My Secret Terius, The Forbidden Marriage). The 12-episode drama also stars Huh Nam-jun, Jang Gyu-ri, Lim Chul-soo, Choi Woo-jin, Jeong Ji-hwan, and Ko Sang-ho. When the Phone Rings airs every Friday and Saturday starting November 22 and can be watched on Netflix.
