But can we enjoy it without hesitation? And can you taste the difference between smoked farmed salmon and wild salmon from the refrigerated shelf? SALMON FROM ALDI, EDEKA, LIDL, REWE, NETTO Markcheck tests smoked wild salmon from Aldi, Edeka and a branded product from Friedrichs as well as smoked farmed salmon from Lidl, Rewe and from Norfisk bought at Netto. In the laboratory, the salmon is examined for nematodes. The roundworms are hardly visible to the naked eye. They are mainly found in wild salmon. CONTAMINANTS IN SALMON Also in focus: dioxins and ethoxyquin. The latter is a fish feed preservative suspected of causing cancer. Ethoxyquin has been banned since the beginning of 2021. Dioxins are highly toxic pollutants. That is why the acceptable intake of dioxins was also recently significantly reduced. SUSTAINABILITY And what about sustainability? All salmon have a long journey behind them. The three wild salmon come from the northeast Pacific near Alaska. The farmed salmon come from Norway and Scotland. From there, everything went to Poland for smoking and packaging. And finally to Germany for sale. The three wild salmon products from Friedrichs, Edeka and Aldi are MSC-certified. At Aldi, the production route can be traced using the QR code. The Lidl farmed salmon has an ASC seal, the Rewe salmon a GGN seal. With the latter, you have to enter two 13-digit numbers to find the producer and processor. The Norfisk farmed salmon from Netto has no seal at all. LABORATORY TEST RESULTS There were no complaints about our salmon in the laboratory. Exception: the nematode test: No roundworms were found in five samples. The wild salmon from Edeka "good & cheap" did contain roundworms, but they were still within the range permitted for sale. Conclusion: The wild salmon from Aldi tastes great and is still in the middle range in terms of price. So Christmas can come.
