The 2001 Giro d'Italia was marked by several bizarre episodes. The eighty-fourth edition of the race gave the public a great challenge between Gilberto Simoni and the Fassa Bortolo duo composed of Dario Frigo and Wladimir Belli, a challenge that was then cut short. Wladimir Belli was in fact disqualified after the fourteenth stage for punching a fan who had been insulting him for days, that fan was Gilberto Simoni's nephew. While Dario Frigo was fired from Fassa Bortolo for events related to doping.
