After modifying the hardware with the Classic keyboard, IPS display, external antenna, battery, new Wi-Fi card and chassis revamp, here is how I optimized the software. My ThinkPad X230 has EC firmware modified to perfectly map the X220 keyboard, and runs on a 1VYRAIN BIOS with patches for the Intel 7260 wireless card. The operating system is Alpine Linux: it runs in RAM with a persistent /home partition, and uses a graphical customization all based on Wayland server with LabWC as the window manager. With only 8GB of RAM, this system can do everything I need.
