There are also poor housing developments made up of caravans and containers in Germany. People who no longer have a chance on the normal housing market live in the trailer parks. A trailer park in Berlin-Lichtenberg was home to almost 200 people for a long time. But the district has decided to have the site cleared. Many residents now don't know what will become of them. Micha has been living in a container for a year. Although he only has 15 square meters to live in and has to share a toilet and shower with others, he likes living in the trailer park: "This is an alternative living space for people who don't conform to the norm." Before that, the 50-year-old had often lived on the streets. He pays 500 euros rent every month for the container, including electricity and water - more than 30 euros per square meter. The job center covers these housing costs. For the owner of the property, who has set up around 30 caravans and 90 containers here, it's a lucrative business. Laura also lives in the trailer park. The 27-year-old works in a call center and is not the only one who ended up in a container despite having a job: "I'm wondering what I've done wrong to have to live here." With her salary, Laura cannot afford most apartments in Berlin. The cost of renting out new apartments has doubled in the last ten years. And in Berlin alone, there is a shortage of more than 130,000 social housing units. The operator of the trailer park has made a lot of money from the housing shortage. The containers and caravans are on a commercial property. Living here is actually not allowed. Because of the illegal and unacceptable conditions, the district has decided to have the trailer park cleared in November 2023. But Micha and many others do not want to leave: "I have a rental agreement and I'm still supposed to leave here." What happens to the residents after the eviction? The report follows four people who have little chance of finding an apartment in Berlin.
