We almost had an American version of Welcome to the Sticks! In 2008, buoyed by the success of the film - still at the top of the French box office today - Dany Boon negotiated with Hollywood for a remake. The project seemed to be well launched, with a title: Welcome to the Sticks. A beginning of a script and Will Smith producing. But, it would never come to fruition. Dany Boon didn't like any version of the script and he preferred to let it go. Before him, other remakes had massacred great classics. Les Visiteurs en Amérique, a simple copy-paste of the original to the point of bringing back Jean Reno and Christian Clavier. Le Dîner de Cons, so what? We would just be cursed in France?
