It is the dark side of our industry: toxic waste. For over 100 years, industrial chemical waste has been generated in Germany, often simply dumped in the countryside. It is particularly bad in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. In this film, MDR WISSEN shows how this problem arose and what solutions international research offers. Toxic waste is one of the most dangerous legacies of our modern society. These are substances that do not lose their toxicity even after millions of years. In search of answers, the film shows what happens to our most dangerous waste - from legacy sites such as in Bitterfeld to probably the most toxic place in the world: a salt dome on the Hesse-Thuringia border. Viewers experience the efforts that must be made to safely dispose of toxic waste for all time - or to recycle parts of it for new applications. They meet researchers on their search for the best possible way to deal with this dangerous legacy of humanity.
