WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN BLEIBURG? Independent State of Croatia World War II The story Docet Bleiburg or the Bleiburg massacre refers to an event that happened at the end of World War II in May 1945, when tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians associated with the Axis forces, who were fleeing Yugoslavia, were returned to the country. Thousands of people were killed, and many were abused and forced on long marches to labor camps. The event was named after the Carinthian border town of Bleiburg on the Austrian-Slovenian border, where the largest number of repatriations took place. Members or collaborators of the Nazi regime, as well as a certain number of civilians, were killed by members of the Yugoslav Army. Most of the victims were Croats, members of the Ustasha and Home Guards. The number of NDH soldiers killed in the battles against the partisans is still undetermined, and there is no accurate data on how many soldiers were executed, mostly without trial as an act of revenge for Ustasha crimes in the NDH. For this reason, the question remains open about the extent of the crime committed by the partisans in that case, practicing the doctrine of "through the court" against the prisoners. The fighting continued in Slovenia and it is difficult to estimate the number of victims on the Bleiburg field compared to those found in the pits around Maribor and throughout Slovenia.
