But on the same day that she told him her decision, he suffered a stroke, followed by a second one a few days later. From then on, the previously well-known and eloquent television journalist suddenly becomes a sick person who, instead of speaking, can only choke and croak incomprehensibly, can no longer walk, read or write, but can still think clearly. While still in hospital, Gabriele von Arnim whispers to him: "If you die, I'll kill you," and stays with him until his death.
