Manure is an excellent natural fertilizer that enriches the soil not only with nitrogen and other nutrients, but also with organic matter and rich bacterial flora. It makes heavy soils lighter, and helps retain water in light, sandy soils. It provides all the necessary nutrients for both plants and microorganisms living in the soil. We do not use fresh manure in organic gardens. Fresh manure is harmful to plants because the bacteria involved in its decomposition need a lot of nitrogen, for which they compete with plants. Among others, the mole cricket is attracted to fresh manure. Composted manure is not attractive to it. Composting increases the value of manure. A wheelbarrow of composted manure has the same fertilizer value as two wheelbarrows of fresh manure. Despite the loss of nitrogen evaporating in volatile form, nitrogen mineralization occurs in the composting process, which allows plants to use this element better.
