If a person comes into an occupied home, he can learn something about the occupant from the objects in the home. But to really get to know the person, a revelation of the person himself is required, an encounter. Of course, the home is on the one hand a collection of objects that are actually just there and can be looked at. But each object probably has meaning, and perhaps an overall context of meaning can then be revealed that refers to the person who lives in this room, this home, and has made it his home. This is comparable to creation: Creation can be seen as God's home, and this home does not just consist of actual things that are there, but everything in creation has its meaning. And it tells us something about the Creator himself, who arranged things in this way. The astrologers, presumably wise people who were well versed in astronomy, observed nature and discovered the significance of the movement of the stars and natural movements for people, followed certain natural phenomena and found the child in the manger. But they found more than just a child, but a situation, a collection of people who literally have infinite significance, infinite meaning. The biblical story tells us that the Magi returned by a different route and did not go to King Herod. This can also be understood, based on the Acts of the Apostles, to mean that they learned something of the infinite significance of this child and went home a different way, changed. How do we feel when we go to Mass or to the sacraments? Do we see it as just things, as objects, or does it make us go home a different way, with a different heart?
