<Anchor> The government announced the safest car selected through various evaluations. This year, four vehicle models were selected, including the Mercedes-Benz E200 and Santa Fe Hybrid. This is reporter Eom Min-jae. <Reporter> A car traveling at 56 km/h crashes into a concrete wall, and an obstacle suddenly pops out and collides with the side of the car. This is a safety evaluation conducted by the government every year to encourage safety investment by automobile manufacturers. This year, nine domestic and foreign car models were evaluated, including Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. In the comprehensive score that combines the evaluations of three detailed items, the Mercedes-Benz E200 received the highest score possible, followed by the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Kia EV3, and Volvo S60. In the collision safety category, which has the largest distribution, the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz E200, and Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid received high scores. On the other hand, the Jeep Wrangler was found to have a relatively large impact on the driver when the body of the car lifts or is pushed significantly in frontal or side collisions. When the car in front suddenly slows down, the Benz E200 and Kia EV3 received high scores for responding to the speed of the car in front or stopping at an appropriate distance. The Model Y and Wrangler sometimes came to a close stop or failed to stop at all depending on the speed, and did not recognize cars coming from behind when backing out. [Na Hyeong-ho/Researcher, Autonomous Driving Research Center, Korea Transportation Safety Authority: It is a function that automatically recognizes cars approaching from the rear and causes the car to brake on its own, but that function did not work at all.] The Jeep Wrangler received low scores in all three categories, receiving the lowest score out of the nine models. As a result of the evaluation of the battery management system for the first time since the electric vehicle fire incident this year, the Kia EV3 and Casper Electric received grade 2, and the Tesla Model Y received grade 4.
