Between doctors and monsters, murders and mysteries, a story about immortality, beauty and criminality is created by one of the most indomitable minds in the history of literature. The Picture of Dorian Gray, the story of the cursed painting that degrades with the passing of the decades, leaving its model untouched by time, finally enters the DarkSide® Books gallery in an edition made to delight admirers and captivate new readers. Oscar Wilde's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray combines the literary and aesthetic refinement of its author with a dark plot, punctuated by passions, crimes and the brilliant and sarcastic Wildean verve. Published in 1890 in the American magazine Lippincott's, the novel was re-released in book form a year later in an edition that censored several passages of the work. Dorian Gray initially offended a Victorian generation that found in the relationship between the friends Dorian, the young man portrayed, Basil, the passionate painter, and Henry, the cynical lord, “the love that dared not speak its name”. It later fascinated readers, critics and artists, who saw in the plot that refers to the myth of Faust the Gospel of a decadentism that believes in a life of art, pleasure and sensory fascination. All this in the midst of a fin de siècle in which convention and morality corroded any pleasure that human existence could enjoy. Organized by Enéias Tavares ― who in addition to being an author in the house, is a professor and researcher ― the special edition of DarkSide® Books is packed with exclusive content. Paulo Cecconi is responsible for the new translation, which was based on the original edition published in Lippincott's magazine and was not censored. Researcher Luiz Gasparelli Jr., a specialist in Wilde, contributes notes that deepen the reading experience, full of biographical data, cultural references and notes on the creative process of its author. The Caveira edition also includes the dossier “Portraits of Oscar Wilde”, with photographs of the author, the harsh reviews the novel received, the heated debate between critics and Wilde himself and a text by Gasparelli about the trials that led to Wilde's imprisonment in 1895. The edition also includes his essay “Pen, Ink and Poison” and a selection of poems compiled and translated by Tavares, in addition to the original illustrations by painter and printer Henry Keen, produced in 1925 for the North American edition of this classic. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel about the destruction of life through the perfection of art, the prices we pay for crimes left secret, the named and unnamed passions that transform who we are into what we should be, not for others but for ourselves. With his novel, Oscar Wilde asks us to reinvent ourselves through art, beauty and passion, precisely what society and morality advise against.
