In this video, Master Engineer Felipe Lima explains what the function of a chiller is. What is the function of a chiller? A chiller is nothing more than a water cooler, and that is precisely the function of a chiller: to produce chilled water to be used in some process. In commercial buildings, chilled water is used in the refrigeration system. In a chilled water refrigeration system, the Chiller and the Fan Coil are two constituent parts of the same system. The Chiller produces the chilled water, and the Fan Coil “uses” the chilled water. What is a Chiller? A chiller is an air conditioning unit that cools water so that it can be used in the process. Air conditioning units that use chillers are used in large environments. Their power is measured in tons of refrigeration, the famous TR (Ton of Refrigeration). How does a chiller system work? As the water passes through the chiller, it lowers its water temperature and produces chilled water. What are the types of chillers? There are currently two types of chillers: water-cooled and air-cooled chillers. How a water-cooled chiller works Water-cooled chillers are versatile and economical. And as the name suggests, they require condensation water. What does that mean? That part of the process will need to be cooled by water. So, in this type of chiller, there are two types of water: chilled water (which goes to the fan coils) and condensation water (which goes to the cooling towers). They are silent devices and, because of this, they are very popular in hospital applications or in large offices. How an air-cooled chiller works Air-cooled chillers, on the other hand, do not use condensation water; the air itself cools the system, very similar to the condenser of a split unit, only much larger. I hope this has helped and that now you know what the function of a chiller is. Good building maintenance to you.
