Grease is an excellent lubricant, but it is not recommended for use on a motorcycle's drive chain (with a few exceptions). This is because grease has low viscosity and does not penetrate the internal parts of the chain (roller pin and bushing). In addition to not being efficient in lubricating the chain, grease can even damage it by accumulating dirt easily, becoming an “abrasive paste” and thus accelerating the wear of the entire assembly (crown, pinion and chain). We can use grease on other motorcycle components such as: Lithium-based grease on the wheel bearings, steering box and pins (balancer and wheel pin). The recommendation by Riffel, a manufacturer of transmission kits for decades, and by motorcycle assemblers is to use a specific oil spray for motorcycle chains or oil with SAE 80 or 90 viscosity.
