Sickle cell disease is a pathology that affects the hemoglobin of red blood cells. The most common genetic disease in France, it currently affects around 11,000 people. It has been systematically screened at birth in a targeted manner since 2000. As a result, around 400 children with sickle cell disease are born each year – particularly in the Ile de France region – mainly from the African or West Indian community. In Aquitaine, this represents around 8 newborns with the disease each year.
