Patrimonialism is, in short, the result of the flawed relationship established between society and the State, when public goods are privately appropriated. In other words, it is the mistaken understanding that the State is a personal asset, the “patrimony” of those who hold power. It was first used by the German sociologist Max Weber, in his book Economy and Society, in the late 19th century. Although Weber created the concept with European history in mind, this personalism in the way of thinking about and experiencing the State can be seen throughout the history of Brazil, and for this reason, patrimonialism is a key concept for those who study this Land of the Holy Cross, especially with regard to the formation of the Brazilian State.
