Despite the promising political transition following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's dictatorship, Syria is now experiencing renewed tensions and uncertainties inherent in the complex and new reality that has emerged. Assad's fall put an end to almost 54 years of family dynasty, inaugurated by his father, Hafez. Both were secular leaders with modernizing ideas, but they represented a religious minority in the country, the Alawites. With the protests against his regime in 2011, Assad took a heavy hand and entered a civil war that killed perhaps 500,000 people and displaced more than 12 million, according to the UN.
