What does it mean to have low vision and how does it impact daily life? Currently, it is estimated that around 2% of the population in Medellín lives with low vision, a condition that, according to the WHO, consists of the loss of visual acuity and/or visual field that makes it impossible to carry out daily life tasks such as cooking, reading, writing, watching television, among others. What is unique about this condition is that it cannot be adequately corrected with conventional glasses, contact lenses, medications or surgery, and that its progress can be silent and unknown. Because of this, low vision is often confused with other visual conditions, affecting its understanding and access to appropriate resources. In this version of Science on a Bike, we will talk with two optometrists to explore what low vision is, its differences with other conditions, the importance of support, and the tools available to improve accessibility. We will also discuss the social interaction of those living with this condition and the urgent need to make their challenges visible. © 2024 Parque Explora. All rights reserved.
