Training to become an emergency paramedic Since January 1st, 2014, the emergency paramedic has replaced the paramedic as the person in charge of the ambulance (RTW) and thus the highest non-medical qualification in the emergency services. As a result, the emergency paramedic takes on a key role in the pre-clinical care of emergency patients. The job description includes the following tasks: • Assessing emergency patients and emergency situations • Taking life-saving measures & carrying out medical, life-saving measures before the emergency doctor arrives • Making tactical decisions In order to meet these requirements, emergency paramedics undergo three years of vocational training, which ends with a State examinations must be completed. Training The three-year training begins every year in October and is structured in a dual format. It consists of theoretical training at a vocational school for emergency paramedics, practical assignments at a training rescue station in a district association, and internships in various areas of clinics. Training at the vocational school teaches theoretical fundamentals and practical skills, which are then deepened in the rescue station and clinic training sections. School A total of at least 1,920 hours of training are planned at a vocational school. Here the student supplements the ambulance team and takes step-by-step measures when carrying out emergency or emergency doctor missions. They are always given expert instruction by a practical instructor or experienced emergency paramedics. Focus of training at the rescue station: • Independently carrying out emergency missions • Assisting with emergency doctor missions • Working with other BOS (fire brigade, police, etc.) • Correct handling of medical products • Special conditions of the area of operation • Restoring operational readiness • Documenting measures taken Clinic In addition to school and the rescue station, there is a 720-hour deployment in various areas of clinics. This offers the opportunity to gain an insight into the further care of patients, to deepen the measures learned and to carry them out in a clinical environment. The emergency paramedic is expertly instructed by nursing staff and doctors.
