There is great need in our world. Especially in the run-up to Christmas, many people are asking themselves: How much should I donate? Moral philosopher Susan Wolf says surprisingly: It's not about us all becoming moral saints. That would actually be a great loss for the world. How does she come to that conclusion? Topics in this episode: 00:00 Why are you skeptical of "moral saints"? 14:05 What is our moral duty? 29:26 What is the difference between the "meaning of life" and the "meaning in life"? 40:44 What does it take to live a meaningful life? The question of the meaning of life is an evergreen in philosophy. As long as belief in God dominated, however, it did not have the explosiveness that it deserves when the creation of meaning can no longer be delegated to a higher power for everyone. If God is dead, the only thing left to do is to find meaning in life itself. The renowned American philosopher Susan Wolf, who is giving the Einstein Lectures at the University of Bern this year, has been thinking about how this can be achieved for many years. She defines a meaningful life as one in which one is passionately committed to projects that also have objective value. These do not necessarily have to be moral endeavors. A gourmet, a musician or a hobby gardener are just as passionate about something that has objective value. For Wolf it is clear: people are not here to improve the world, but to make something of their lives. But can one primarily strive for one's own fulfillment when others are suffering?
