Imagine the Mediterranean Sea disappearing. Several sunken ships coming to the surface as the water level recedes. Not to mention the cruise ships that would no longer be glamorous. This time, at least, this scenario is not a consequence of climate change. We are intentionally emptying the Mediterranean. If we closed off access to the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean’s main source of water, we would practically create a new desert, connecting Europe and Africa. With this new supercontinent, not only would international trade be facilitated, but we would also have access to the renewable energy sources that we so desperately need. But what would be the environmental impact of removing such a large amount of water from the planet? How would we use this new piece of land? And what happened the last time someone tried to do this?
