!!!! Domestic violence hotline: 08000 116 016 A true narcissist is someone who has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). People with NPD believe that they are superior and unique compared to others, and they expect to be recognized and treated as such. They are often unable to recognize the opinions and needs of others, and are dismissive of others' problems. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists nine criteria for NPD, but states that someone only needs to meet five of them to clinically qualify as a narcissist. These include: •grandiose self-esteem •preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love •belief that they are special and unique and can only be understood by or should be associated with other special or high-ranking people or institutions •need for excessive admiration •sense of entitlement •interpersonal exploitative behavior •lack of empathy •envy of others or the belief that others are jealous of them •demonstration of arrogant and haughty behaviors or attitudes
