A year ago, the creator of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced that he and his mercenaries were launching a “march of justice” on Moscow to overthrow the Russian military leadership. Early in the morning of June 24, the Wagnerites essentially took control of Rostov-on-Don. That same evening, the rebellion ended. Soon after, Prigozhin’s empire ceased to exist, and he himself died that same summer in a mysterious plane crash in the Tver region. Over the past 12 months, the lives of the other participants in this story have changed dramatically. The BBC tells what happened to them then and how they live now.
