Life in the mountains is beautiful, but also very difficult. Viktor Beránek is a high-altitude porter and one of the most famous lodgers in the High Tatras. It has been 52 years since he sacrificed his life to this noble profession. He is a man who offers the world a unique view of the world and the values ​​that really matter. --- Viktor is a mountain hut keeper and one of the oldest representatives of the porter tradition in High Tatras, Slovakia - the only mountains in Europe where this tradition has been still thriving. This talk was recorded as an interview at Chata Rysy, the highest mountain hut in Slovakia for an online edition of TEDxBratislava 2021. Viktor shares beautiful insights from living a simple life up in the mountains, carrying heavy loads on his back every day and creating memories for hikers and mountaineers. The legendary cottager Viktor Beránek (69) came to the mountains when he left high school because he was threatened with punishment for being a parasite. He alternated between several high-altitude chalets, before he settled in 1977 as a chalet at the highest chalet in Slovakia at an altitude of 2,250 meters. He has been working at the cottage under Rysmi for more than 40 years. For him, freedom plays the biggest role in the mountains. He is not in the mountains only because of their beauty, but mainly because he feels free here. --- Viktor Beránek (69) is a legendary mountain hut keeper and porter. For the past 40 years he has been a hut keeper at the highest-altitude mountain hut in Slovakia, 2,250 meters above sea level. In his eyes, there is nothing more important in the mountains than freedom. He chose living a simple life in mountains not just for their beauty, but mainly because they are a place where he feels free.
