With this talk, Mayra Arena offers us a deep reflection on the prejudices with which poverty is usually viewed. She narrates it in the first person, sharing her own experience of being born and growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. A passionate and mobilizing talk, to reflect on our own views. Mayra Arena was born in Bahía Blanca and is a Political Science student at the National University of Tres de Febrero. She became known locally as a result of her profound letter entitled “The benefits of being poor”, where she tells, crudely and in the first person, experiences of life in the slum, generating the counterpoint between poverty and marginality. This note quickly went viral and opened the door to learn about other reflections by Mayra around social and economic problems. She seeks, she says, to make political analysis and discussion accessible to people in the neighborhoods. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
