Our Erik Smits, architect-partner at ZJA, tells us about the ZJA design and the renovation of Amsterdam Centraal while wearing a striking ProRail construction helmet. Renovating, improving and future-proofing Amsterdam Centraal station is already a complex task, but it becomes even more complicated when you consider that this is a national monument and the available space cannot be expanded. Every centimetre counts. The design provides for an improved layout of the scarce space, creates coherence between the design of platforms and passenger tunnels and opts for the re-exposure and reconstruction of the brick arch construction of the Cuypersgebouw on the city side. In order to coordinate the new layout and the care for the monumental quality, ZJA is working together with Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau.
