In this video, we will see that there are several ways to classify chemical reactions. The most common of these is based on the number of reactants and products involved in the reaction. Within this classification, we have the combination reaction, also called synthesis or addition. Another type of reaction is decomposition or analysis, when a substance gives rise to two or more products with different characteristics from the original reactant. The third type is the simple exchange or displacement reaction. In this case, a simple substance reacts with a compound substance to give rise to a new simple substance and another compound substance. Another possibility is the double exchange reaction, very common in precipitation reactions, when there is an exchange of ions involved in the reaction and leads to the reorganization and formation of new products. Finally, we have combustion or burning reactions. These reactions generally involve the presence of oxygen gas, which is called the oxidizer, and another substance, which is the fuel. When the burning is complete, we have the production of water and carbon dioxide gas, and when it is incomplete, there is the generation of carbon monoxide and soot (black smoke).
