Roosters bring little profit to the poultry market, they do not lay eggs and produce little meat. That is why many German poultry farmers sell millions of chicks abroad. Animal welfare is often overlooked. Because they do not lay eggs, around 45 million male chicks were slaughtered in Germany every year. This was banned in 2022. Since then, many cartons of eggs from German laying hen production have been labelled: “No chick slaughter.” But where are the roosters now? In Germany, breeding these animals is so expensive that most hatcheries cannot afford the costs. Roosters are often bred abroad, especially in Poland. But what are the conditions like there? Animal rights activists have evidence of dire conditions for the animals. Fattened roosters are often sold to Africa. In Ghana, meat from Europe is often cheaper than that from domestic poultry. Ghanaian breeders suffer huge losses due to cheap imports from Europe. The report follows the trail from the hatching of chicks in a German farmyard to their rearing in Poland and sale to Ghana. The investigation shows: Germany's ban on chick slaughter shifts problems abroad, and animal welfare is often ignored. The law seems well-intentioned, but has not been sufficiently thought through. #dwdocumentary #documentary #chicks #meat ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
