This fall marked the tenth anniversary of the American podcast Serial, which launched the rise in popularity of the true crime genre — journalistic investigations of real crimes, primarily high-profile murders. The true crime boom is still ongoing, including in Russia. Often, people are ashamed of their interest in such materials. In addition, this genre is causing more and more controversy. Investigators are accused of aestheticizing violence, romanticizing maniacs, creating personality cults of killers, disrespecting victims, and trying to profit from the suffering of others. Can the popularity of true crime be considered a symptom of some kind of social pathology? And should we give up such content? We find out in this episode.
