Geopolitical conflicts and social media: it's a combination that often causes a stir. Because which version of a war do we see in our timelines, and why? And do some voices really sound softer, or louder? In this video from the Nieuwsuur series Ophef (Hero), we look at how your timeline on Instagram and TikTok is created. Who decides which images about the war between Hamas and Israel you see there, and why? We traveled to Tel Aviv and the occupied West Bank and spoke to the spokesperson for TikTok in the Netherlands. We also put it to the test ourselves. Which of our posts does Instagram show and which does it not? And what do we come across about the war when we scroll on TikTok? We submitted the results to Meta and TikTok, but we did not always get a clear answer. What do social media tell us about their working methods and what do they not?
