Sara Miranda Research Assistants INDICASAT AIP Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is a facultative intracellular pathogen and etiological agent of bovine paratuberculosis, an infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract of domestic and wild ruminant animals. The progress of infection with MAP leads to the development of a clinical picture called Johne's disease. This disease is characterized by intermittent to persistent and chronic diarrhea, dehydration, progressive emaciation, and submandibular edema in advanced stages. Environmental contamination with MAP occurs due to the presence of infected animals that release bacteria mainly in feces.
