The US military has always sought to develop innovative weapons, but sometimes designs like the XM29 and XM25 have been shelved due to heavy weight, complexity, and technical problems. The XM25 was effective with the ability to detonate grenades in the air, but its weight and dangers caused it to be abandoned. Also, other designs such as the Stoner 63 and ARES FMG were not successful and did not reach mass production, because implementation problems and the type of ammunition caused them to fail. These designs show the army's efforts to build multipurpose and advanced weapons.
