This week, the SH channel has been in Trujillo, a town of conquistadors. Some film buffs know the town because some scenes from “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” were filmed in the Plaza Mayor and the Alcazaba of Trujillo. Trujillo is the birthplace of the conquistador of Peru, Francisco Pizarro. But there were other conquistadors like Francisco de Orellana. Those conquistadors who returned rich from the New World built stately homes, palaces and churches here. Trujillo is also the city of Diego García de Paredes, nicknamed “the Samson of Extremadura.” He had such enormous strength for his two-metre height that his exploits as a soldier did not go unnoticed by the great writers of literature such as Lope de Vega and Cervantes, who immortalised him in Don Quixote: “A Viriato had Lusitania, a Caesar, Rome, a Hannibal, Carthage, an Alexander, Greece, a Count Fernán González, Castile, a Cid, Valencia, a Gonzalo Fernández, Andalusia, a Diego García de Paredes, Extremadura…” Trujillo appears in the guides to the most beautiful towns in Spain. It has a simply spectacular old town, very well preserved. It is full of palaces and fortified houses. Walking through its cobbled streets and historic buildings is like walking through a medieval village. The Alcazaba of Trujillo, also very well maintained, offers us phenomenal views of the town and its surroundings. From the Alcazaba we can also walk along several paths and contemplate, practicing “urbex” or “rúrex”, the ruins of the Church of Santo Domingo and the Convent of La Magdalena.
