In Korea, Zen usually refers to the simple Zen that focuses on a koan with one mind, and is a representative Buddhist practice method. Sitting Zen is common, and it differs from meditation in that it focuses on the koan, and from breathing training in that it is not greatly restricted by posture and breathing. The koan is a word that the Buddha and the patriarchs used to refer to as a disconnected path of speech and thought. In order to understand the koan, the mind that has been doubting becomes one with the koan and finally breaks through the koan, and thus one attains Buddhahood. Breaking through the koan is like waking up from a dream. The enlightened world is infinitely vast like the void. All things in that world are equal, and there is no superiority or inferiority, no nobility, no friendliness, or right or wrong. There is only a peaceful world without opposition, conflict, or struggle. During the three months of the summer rainy season, a separate period was created in which one stopped all activities and stayed in one place to devote oneself to practice and diligence, which is called An-gyo.
