In the first episode of Traces, Sa'düddîn Ökten mainly explained the following; My birth date is 1942, during World War II, the location is Istanbul. The Bayazıt district of Istanbul. The historical peninsula. There was a serencam there, primary school, middle school, high school, Vefa high school then technical university but again the neighborhoods we lived in were Bayazıt. Also my grandmother’s house is in Fatih Atikali, one of my uncles lives very close to Fatih Mosque then of course life changes, the city changes, Turkey changes. We had to leave those neighborhoods. Many years passed and we saw the Frankish homelands, Europe, America etc. When I go back and evaluate it, I see the following, the environment where he grew up, the architecture in that environment, the people in that environment and the lifestyle in that environment, namely Bayazıt, Fatih, Atikali... I had friends, acquaintances in Aksaray, Cerrahpaşa, Kocamustafapaşa... What I saw there was; although the Ottoman Empire had withdrawn from life as a state, it continued as a civilization... In later years I tried to name it as follows; the Ottoman interpretation of Islamic civilization. But basically it was an interpretation of Islamic civilization, especially Sunni Islam, this was the air in which I lived, was raised, and more or less breathed until the beginning of middle age... Modernity had not yet come to those neighborhoods. It had come to Turkey, but it was on the other side, it was in Pera, Kadıköy, maybe it was on the islands, but it had not come to Fatih, despite everything, to Bayazıt, to Aksaray. It had not come as a mentality, it had not come in form. I can easily say that I was raised in such an environment and that I was shaped in a sense... Continued in the video...
