The world's best-selling car type is a mid-range SUV, and in Sweden two of the three best-selling cars are SUVs (Volvo XC60 and XC40 respectively). Volkswagen is now entering this segment with an electric car that has all the prerequisites to become a real crowd favorite. The VW ID.4 is based on the same base plate as the ID.3 and it has been developed especially for electric operation. The characteristics are a flat floor, long wheelbase and good interior space. The comparison with the Volvo XC60 feels relevant, both in terms of price and size, where the ID.4 actually feels more spacious in the cabin and has a slightly larger trunk. Open space is what Volkswagen calls the new coupe concept, which avoids bulky gimbal tunnels and tall center consoles that form parts of the coupe. The result is a pleasant and airy compartment with a high level of comfort. Volkswagen states that the ID.4 has a WLTP range of up to 522 km. The battery is 77 kWh (net) and there is an electric motor on the rear axle with an output of 150 kW or 204 horses. There will be a top model with four-wheel drive (one motor on each axle) in 2021. The charging capacity amounts to 125 kW with fast charging, which gives 320 new kilometers in just 30 minutes. When charging at home, the ID.4 receives up to 11 kW. The example we test drove is called ID.4 1st Max and is fully equipped with everything from intelligent LED headlights, electrically adjustable seats, panoramic roof, adaptive shock absorbers and a host of assistance systems that make driving both safe and comfortable. The more equipment, the more weight, which means that the test vehicle has a range of 488 km according to the WLTP. If it costs, it tastes good: SEK 614,900 before bonus. Towbar (towing weight 1,000 kg) and heat pump are standard on both 1st versions, which is appreciated. However, something we find remarkable is that there is no seat heating in the back seat as it is a much more efficient way of keeping warm than filling the cabin with hot air. Anything that draws energy in an electric car takes away from the range. Pricing is aggressively competitive and the current entry-level ID.4 1st starts at SEK 514,900 before bonus. It is only SEK 20,000 more than what an entry-level model of the Volvo XC60 costs. With the electric car's low operating and ownership costs, there are only advantages. The ID.4 will be a car to reckon with.
