Every shower is compatible with DR, what influences compatibility is the water quality and we will explain everything in this video. This myth has been haunting some electricians for years and an explanation is not always enough to justify why that DR installed in the shower keeps tripping. What needs to be clear to every electrician is that the problem is not in the shower but in the water. But how come the problem is in the water? That's right. The problem is in the water and we'll understand why below. Every shower is tested according to the NBR-1290 standard to measure the leakage current. This test is done in 3 places in the shower: 1- At the water inlet; 2- In the shower body; 3- At the water outlets. Metal plates are placed 1 cm away from the water inlets and outlets and, using a 25 Ohm resistor plus a resistance arrangement that simulates the human body plus an ammeter (all connected in series), it is possible to measure these leakage currents. The most important detail is that these measurements are made with the water resistivity at 1,300 ohms x cm at a temperature of 22°C. The water resistivity is the most important item to ensure an acceptable leakage current that will not cause harm to people who are bathing and will also not cause the IDR to trip unduly. We know that water resistivity can vary greatly in different regions of our country. We also know that water from artesian wells has a different resistivity than river water. Sea water has very low resistivity while river water has higher resistivity, and so on. The secret is the water resistivity. So when choosing your shower model, check the resistivity of the water that the manufacturer guarantees will work with the IDR, measure the resistivity of your water and make sure it is compatible with the chosen shower model. And if the resistivity of my water is not compatible with the conventional shower models on the market, what do I do? In this case, you have two solutions: 1- Treat your water to increase the resistivity; 2- Use a shower that has armored resistance. And if my water has very low resistivity and I do not want to treat it or use armored resistance, can I install a shower without using the IDR? No, guys. The use of the IDR or DDR is mandatory in wet environments according to NBR-5410 and this includes the shower. By not installing the DR, you are failing to comply with a regulatory item and if an accident occurs that involves physical damage or death, you as the responsible professional will be held legally responsible for this. Better not to take that risk, right guys? So now you know: If my water has a resistivity compatible with the manufacturer's shower, I can install a DR and it won't trip, and if it's not compatible, I'll use a shower with an armored resistance and problem solved. ????
