The Fukuoka Art Museum has a valuable collection of Buddhist art, including 25 statues designated as Important Cultural Properties by the government, donated by Yakuomitsuji Toko-in Temple (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City). These works are constantly on display in the "Toko-in Buddhist Art Room" on the first floor of the museum, and are loved as a spot where you can appreciate the masterpieces of Buddhist statues up close. The exhibits are changed every four months. This time, the entire Twelve Heavenly Generals statues were replaced. Yes, Toko-in Temple is unusual in that it has two sets of Twelve Heavenly Generals (nine statues from the Heian period, three from the Edo period, and twelve from the Northern and Southern Courts period) (of which 21 statues from the Heian and Southern and Northern Courts periods are designated as Important Cultural Properties). This time, the exhibits were changed to replace the Twelve Heavenly Generals from the Heian period with those from the Northern and Southern Courts period. Two curators of antique art filmed the six-hour work with a fixed-point camera. I put together a 5.5 minute video in fast forward! Filming date: Monday, July 20, 2020 (Closed day)
