Koh Muk, Koh Libong Subdistrict, Kantang District, Trang Province, is a famous tourist island, the third largest in Trang Province, approximately 30 minutes from the shore. The main occupations of the villagers are fishing and rubber plantations. “Phu Yai Phan”, the village headman of Koh Muk, said that cars are prohibited on Koh Muk, only motorcycles and tricycles are allowed because the roads are small and narrow. Fresh water is scarce and used sparingly. Since living on an island surrounded by the sea, fresh water is scarce. The ancestors of Koh Muk dug fresh water wells for drinking, both public wells for everyone on the island to use and wells dug in the village area. Currently, there are about 3-4 fresh water wells for drinking and more than 10 public bathing wells. Most of the fresh water wells are in gardens, such as coconut or rubber plantations. Those who want to use water can go and get it themselves. However, those who do not have time to get water to drink or use will buy water from “Bang Uat”, who is a water seller. Each trip is 100 baht. All of the people on Koh Muk are customers of Bang Bobo or jellyfish, the new hope of the people on Koh Muk. During the dry season from December to May, the boats will be modified to catch “Bobo” or “jellyfish”, which generates a great income. They can be caught once a year. The jellyfish that are caught are called “Lot Chong jellyfish”, which have clear jelly on their heads that look like Lod Chong. They also help them reproduce. Their bodies have two parts: the head and the legs (tail). “Jellyfish” have poisonous mucus. Do not let the mucus get in your eyes, it will cause itching. When there are no jellyfish on Koh Muk, the villagers will drive their boats out of their homes on Koh Muk from early morning from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM to scoop up jellyfish in Thung Wa District, Satun Province, especially in the area that is a triangle in front of Koh Phetcha because that place is where many rivers converge, so there are a lot of jellyfish. The important equipment for catching jellyfish is a “rake” used for scooping. The boat will have a cage made of a net with a fine mesh of about 1 inch and 4-5 meters long for putting the jellyfish in. When the boat is full of jellyfish, they will be sold at the pier. The jellyfish will be thrown in one by one and rested in the cage until full. Then the owner of the raft will quickly put the jellyfish in a basket and transport it with a “head winch” or “wire pulley” which is 50 cm wide and 20 meters long. Pull it up and pour it into the upper channel to sort it. Cut off the head and tail and then soak it in salt, alum, and soda to extract the poison and itchiness for months. If you want to cook it, you have to soak the jellyfish in clean water for 2 nights to reduce the saltiness. Then boil it until cooked and cook it into a menu as you like, whether it is a spicy salad, boiled and dipped, or what many people know as adding it to our favorite yen ta fo. During the jellyfish season, up to 1,500 - 2,000 can be caught per day. The selling price of each jellyfish is 3.50 baht.
