In this video: Video, picture, song and calls of the waxwing Name: Waxwing Family: Waxwings The North European waxwing is a regular winter guest here, but not in summer, as it does not breed in Germany! More information in the video. Characteristic features/appearance: Waxwings are about the size of a starling and have a compact stature. The head is a cinnamon-brown tone, while the rest of the body has predominantly grey-brown plumage and a striking crest that can be raised when excited. The back is blue-grey, with a black eye mask and black chin flap. Yellow ends on the tail feathers and a yellow-white-red wing pattern. Size: 18-22 cm Weight: 35-85 g Age: 13-14 years Females: Males and females look the same, the male's plumage is just slightly more intensely coloured. Song/calls: High-sounding contact call "sirrrr", often heard in many voices when a flock takes off. Song also consists of a high, fine hissing, somewhat stuttering, a series of lure-like tones mixed in with hard, rough sounds. Breeding season: May to July, 1 annual brood, 13-15 day incubation period Nest: Bowl-shaped nest in the upper part of a spruce tree Clutch size: 4-7 eggs Diet: Insects during the breeding season, in winter almost exclusively rowan, juniper, medlar and elderberry fruit. It also likes to eat apples at feeding stations. Habitat: Not a breeding bird in Germany, just a winter guest on its way south! Otherwise the breeding range of the North European Waxwing extends in the northern regions of Eurasia from the Russian taiga to northern Scandinavia. There it breeds in damp spruce forests. Migratory behavior: Partial migrant Endangered: Not currently endangered in its breeding area.
