Have you noticed that astronomers are always looking for water on other planets? That's because all life forms that we know on Earth have water in their composition and need water for their development. Therefore, in an attempt to find extraterrestrial life forms, scientists try to find something in common among all terrestrial life forms: water! But, do you know why water is so important for life? Do you know its functions in our body? The composition of water involves two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The classic formula for H2O. When you look at a drop of water, you should know that there are millions of similar molecules that form that drop. Almost 80% of the surface of Planet Earth is covered by water. That is why it is nicknamed “Water Planet”. Water is considered a universal solvent, because almost all substances can be dissolved in it. For example, when you put a little sugar in water, it “dissolves” in the water. The amount of water in a living being depends on its species and also on the stage of life it is in (its metabolic state). In humans, for example, about 65% of our bodies are made up of water. A jellyfish has 98% of its body made up of water, living up to its name. On the other hand, seeds, which are theoretically “dormant”, have about 10% water. In general, living organisms or tissues with a high metabolism contain a lot of water in their bodies. This metabolic capacity, in addition to varying between living beings, also varies throughout the life of a single living being. For example, a human baby has about 80% water in its body. In the elderly, whose cells considerably lose the ability to retain water, the percentage of water in the body drops to around 50%. Any questions?
