Northern Syria is a war zone on the front lines of climate change. In the past few years, extreme heat and conflict have caused a crisis. In the Rojava region, people say the military operation launched by Turkey in 2019 has deepened their water crisis. Turkey has said it targeted “terrorist” facilities in its attacks. BBC Eye has examined more than 100 attacks on oil fields, gas facilities and power plants. BBC Eye has found that there have been a number of attacks on four key power plants in the region after examining satellite imagery, eyewitness video, news reports and visits to the facilities. The Turkish government told the BBC that it has the right to self-defence against the PKK. The statement emphasised that Turkey was acting in accordance with international humanitarian law and prioritising the safety of civilians. It also emphasised that the UN’s claim that Turkey may have committed war crimes is baseless. The statement also included the following statements: “Legitimizing ‘Rojava’ and a ‘Kurdish homeland’ is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions on the territorial integrity of Syria and will not contribute to a peaceful future.” BBC Turkish website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/turkce Facebook: / bbcturkceservisi Twitter: / bbcturkce Instagram: / bbcturkce
